COVID-19 Testing

Patient and Provider Information

Heartland Pathology is now offering COVID-19 testing. Samples are collected through the patient’s healthcare provider or at Heartland Pathology Diagnostics with a physician’s order. Patients and providers should review the information on this page prior to testing.

Please contact Stacy Gasper sgasper@heartlandpathology.com or 316-260-1400 to get setup for testing

Available Types of COVID-19 Tests

  • COVID-19 Nasal Swab Test

This test should be used by patients that show signs and symptoms of the disease. This is a PCR test that is collected from the nasal sinus using a nasopharyngeal collection procedure that detects active COVID-19 virus in your nasal sinus. This test is used to detect active disease in a patient.

  • COVID-19 Antibody Blood Test

This test should be used by patients who think they have come in contact with the disease but are not showing signs or symptoms. This is an immunoassay test ran off of blood collected from a venipuncture. This test is used to see if your body has come in contact with the virus by detecting immune cells your body has created to fight the disease. This test will not tell you if you are actively infected but rather tell you if your body is having an immune response to the virus. This test can’t be used alone to diagnose or exclude a COVID-19 infection. A positive antibody test should be followed with the swab test to see if you are actively infected and can still pass the disease. A negative antibody test should be followed by the swab test if you are showing symptoms because your body may not have developed an immune response yet.

Guidelines for COVID-19 Testing

  • Instructions for COVID-19 Nasal Swab Tests

    COVID-19 Hours: 7:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday–Friday
    Questions? Call (316) 260-1400

    Providers Should:

Pre-register patients for a proper workflow to be maintained. The office can fax the order, date of collection, patient demographics and insurance information for the next day to (316) 260-1409. This allows Heartland Pathology Diagnostics to prepare all paperwork and make sure adequate supplies are available for doctor needs and patient safety.

    Patients Should:

    1. Arrive at Heartland Pathology Diagnostics (9300 E. 29th St. N., #209) at the designated time.
    2. Park in the marked stall in the West parking lot located next to the unmarked West entrance.
    3. Remain in their vehicle and call (316) 260-1400 to inform the front desk staff that they have arrived and are there for a COVID-19 nasal collection.

    Next:

    1. Upon arrival at the vehicle, personnel will verify the patient’s name and date of birth with a preregistration label. Once identity is verified, personnel will hand the biohazard bag to the patient, ask them to blow their nose using the Kleenex and place it back into the biohazard bag.
    2. At this point, the personnel will collect the swab using CDC guidelines for collecting nasopharyngeal swabs.
    3. Once the specimen is collected, the collection personnel will place the swab back into its holder and label it with the preregistration label. The patient will be free to leave and will be informed of the results from the ordering physician.
